Old Spokes On CBC Radio

June 14, 2015

One of the great things about cycling is that it's a low impact sport, which means you can do it at any age.

That may be why 255 Calgary seniors have signed up for weekly rides around the city and beyond.

Some members of the Old Spokes cycling club biked to The Beltliner on Friday morning to talk about their group and meet the crew of theCalgary Eyeopener, which was broadcasting live from the diner.

"Our spokes aren't rusty, nor are our chains," said the group's 70-year-old co-ordinator Larry Patterson.

The Old Spokes has three levels of cycling to meet the needs of different riders:

  • Level 1 does 10- to 20-kilometre rides on Tuesdays.
  • Level 2 cycle an average of 35 kilometres on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Level 3 bikes a minimum of 35 kilometres at a faster pace with more hills on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays.

The Old Spokes welcome anyone age 55 to 85 and also organize out-of-town trips to Canmore and Drumheller.

"It's never too late to get back on your bike," said Allen Leier, who cycles year-round.
