Cycling Ride

Level 3

Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 11:00am

Considered by many to be one of the top scenic drives in Canada this is even better on a bike.  This section of Hwy 40 is closed to cars until Jun 15.  Steady gradual climb 1.9 to 2.2 % grade for 38 Km with a total vertical on approx 750 metres.  Rest stops as needed.  If you get tired you can always coast back to the start point with a riding partner. For those who reach the summit descent speeds over 50 Km/h are easily obtainable as your reward for your hard work.

To check weather (which can be quite different than Calgary) Google "highwood pass weather" .  Lots of wildlife to see as they are not spooked by cars yet. Bear spray suggested. Ideally your smallest front chain ring should have less teeth than your largest rear cassette cog for an efficient climbing cadence and your brakes need to be in top shape for the descent.

For our ride you must access the start point from Longview (Highway 541 West) as Highway 40 is closed to cars.  From Longview (last chance for gas, flush toilets, tourist info, Longview Jerky Shop etc) Highwood Junction is 45 Km West.

Copy and paste this text into your browser search bar for a ride map from another rider.  I was going to ride and map it last weekend but got rained out
