Cycling Ride

Level 2

Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 10:00am

We'll meet at the Fenlands Rec Centre parking lot( just left at Mt Norquay exit).  From there we will ride along the Vermilion Lakes to Hwy 1A, which is still closed to vehicular traffic. Note that you don't need a park pass to be in the park then. The 1A, aka Bow Valley Parkway, goes past meadow and mountain views all the way to Johnston's Canyon. Often there is a head wind as you ride towards the canyon. There are also a couple of steep hills to climb. Several washrooms along the way provide relief when needed. We may see bears feeding on dandelions in the ditches ,elk with their calves, and bighorn sheep scrambling on the slopes. As much as possible, it's best to ride in the middle of the road. Staying close together is the best way to prevent unpleasant interactions with animals. However, if you have them, bring bear spray and/or bear horns just in case we need them. Kathy and I will bring ours. Usually, the animals are relaxed and busy eating, so there isn't a problem.

The plan is changed slightly for lunch stop -we will eat  at the second picnic site along the route so plan to bring a packed lunch.  We will then stop about 20 minutes later at Johnston's Canyon.  You have a chance to get ice cream for dessert or just admire the scenery. The ride back is slightly downhill. It features a beautiful view of the river valley. The ride distance is about 45k and takes approximately 4 hours.  If things go as planned, we should be back at the parking lot mid afternoon.
