Cycling Ride

Level 2

Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 10:00am

We'll meet at the Banff Train Station north parking lot, then ride along the Vermilion Lakes to Hwy 1A, which is still closed to vehicular traffic. Note that you don't need a park pass to be in the park then. The 1A, aka Bow Valley Parkway, goes past meadow and mountain views all the way to Johnston's Canyon. Often there is a head wind as you ride towards the canyon. There are also a couple of steep hills to climb. Several washrooms along the way provide relief when needed. We may see bears feeding on dandelions in the ditches ,elk with their calves, and bighorn sheep scrambling on the slopes. As much as possible, it's best to ride in the middle of the road. Staying close together is the best way to prevent unpleasant interactions with animals. However, if you have them, bring bearspray and/or bearhorns just in case we need them. Kathy and I will bring ours. Usually, the animals are relaxed and busy eating, so there isn't a problem.

Johnston's Canyon is an ideal spot for lunch. You can bring your own, or buy from the cafe, which also claims to have the world's best ice cream. The ride back is slightly downhill. It features a beautiful view of the river valley. The ride distance is about 50k. If things go as planned, we should be back at the parking lot mid afternoon.
