Special Instructions for Leaders
Think about a possible route that you would like to scout and possibly lead. It would be great if each scheduled leader contacts another leader to do exploratory rides with or share maps with to make it possible to split groups into smaller groups, if needed. If the second leader is comfortable with the ride route, the original leader does not have to be responsible for both groups to distinguish it from a tandem ride. To make it easier to control walkie-talkies, it is still good to for both groups to start at the same location with possibly a different start time of 5 min. This will help us to train new leaders for routes. The more routes that leaders are familiar with the stronger our club will be!
Our Motto: “Leaders Mentoring Leaders”.
It's great when you can lead the same ride on both Tues. and Thurs. Since some members ride either Tues or Thurs. It is good to schedule the identical rides on different weeks to accommodate members who are on holidays.
Our L2 rides will usually be between 30 - 40 km in length. Although this is sometimes stretched to allow our L2 riders to experience more varied rides especially later in the season.
(Note - this schedule is not set in stone, each ride leader determines his/her final plans.
- Trips will be cancelled at each leader's discretion, due to poor weather such as rain, snow, high winds and/or cold temperatures.)
Additional Rides
If a leader wishes to lead a L2 ride on a different day than Tues or Thurs, please arrange it with me or Brock. There is more flexibility on # of riders and distance on an Additional ride. Additional rides are appreciated and can be used for training, exploration, route practice or just to give another ride option. In 2022 we had a Garden Tour on a Fri.
There may be times that we move our scheduled ride to another week day due to weather. I consider those rides to be Scheduled rides, not Additional rides.
L2 Scheduled Rides- Attention Leaders
Since our L2 rides are very popular, it is important to design our rides to allow 20+ riders to have the opportunity to ride on each day.
As scheduled leaders, I ask for your cooperation in making this happen without me (Hazel) having to spend time coordinating different rides from different starting locations.
Note - the scheduled leader (with my help) has the responsibility to pick a second leader for his/her planned ride. This will make it possible to have smaller groups which it seems many leaders and riders prefer. The scheduled leader (with my help) will split the group into 2 riding groups with second leader leaving 5 min. after first.
If there is no second leader found who can lead the route then we will use Tandem Riding Guidelines and the initial leader will be responsible for both groups.
Tandem Rides - One Big Group split into 2 Smaller Groups
- We will be allowing bigger main group of 20 or 24 riders. If the group is bigger than 15, depending on the leader, it will be split up into 2 groups both with a leader and a sweep. The main leader knows the route and is responsible for both groups. The second leader manages intersections for Group 2 and ensures Group 2 stays together by leaving corner guides.
The second leader will call the Main Leader to stop if his/her group falls behind. Please refer to Tandem Ride Guidelines on how to implement this.
