Cycling Ride

Signup will be available starting at 8 am Wednesday July 5, 2023.

This new ride is an ideal warmup for anyone participating in the three day Columbia Valley ride.

This 40+ km ride will include moderate longer hill climbs along with some shorter, steep climbs.  We will be cycling through communities many members haven’t visited before.

The starting point for this ride will be the Crowchild Twin Arena parking lot - 185 Scenic Acres Dr NW Calgary AB. 

The ride will include:

• Short ride through Scenic Acres and Tuscany to the Tuscany LRT station, We will follow the cycle path adjacent to Stoney Trail from Tuscany to climb to the top of the Royal Oak hill.
• From here will make our way through Citadel and into the Hamptons. Some lovely paths with some short steep hills.
• We’ll continue through Edgemont which offer a long downhill section before joining the cycle path up to Nose Hill Park.
• We'll stop for lunch in Nose Hill Park or continue on based on the group’s feedback. There are flush toilets at the entrance of Nose Hill Park.
• After an enjoyable ride on the top of Nose Hill Park we will join the path along John Laurier Blvd and make our way to Varsity Acres.
• From here, riders will travel through the University Research Park and onto the U of C campus. We’ll stop at MacKimmie Tower as it is a fascinating eco friendly building. We can stop at McEwan Hall for a washroom break.
• We'll head west to ride through the new University District and make our way back through Varsity and Silver Springs to the Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs. Many of the flower gardens should be in full bloom.
• At this point we have some options including:
  1. Making our way through Silver Springs and back into Scenic Acres
  2. Or we can extend the ride by following the ridge pathway in Silver Springs and then dropping down into Bowmont and Baker Park. From here, we will follow the path to a short climb into Scenic Acres.

This ride will be mostly on paved pathways with a few short sections on public roads.  It is important your bike be in good condition, especially your brakes.  Bring along the usual – water, sunscreen, lunch, etc.   If the temperature warrants it, we may move up the ride to 9 am.
