A pleasant ride in Calgary's SE quadrant, and part of Fish Creek park.
This is a replacement for the "breakfast ride" that took place in September, 2022, and the ride that was planned for May 18, but was cancelled because of poor air quality.
Start:
We will commence from Trico (I frequently refer to it as the FLC) which is opposite Southcentre shopping centre. The ride will be about 44 km:
From the Trico parking lot (SE corner) we will tour the south end of Willow Park and Mapleridge to end up on the Bow River pathway. Then we will proceed along paths in Quarry Park and the Shepard industrial area to the (hopefully wet) marshlands just east of Stoney Trail where we may see some migrating water fowl. From there we will head west through Copperfield, New Brighton, McKenzie Towne and Lake to Fish Creek Park. From Glennfield we will travel north to the Canyon Meadows train station where we'll cross Macleod Trail, then head north to Southcentre and end up back at Trico.
General Comments:
The Trico Centre is on Bonventure Drive across from Southcentre shopping centre. To get there, take Macleod Trail to Anderson and from Anderson head a block north to the Trico Centre. From Deerfoot Trail, take the Anderson exit to Bonaventure Drive and proceed north for about a block. Please park in the SE corner of the lot.
This is a little longer than the usual level 2 ride, but given good weather, and the fact that there are no long and steep hills, it should be pleasant for both pedal bikers and electric bikers. There is however, a short but steep hill which descends into the park from Mackenzie. Good brakes will ensure your safe descent.
For bathrooms, we can make a stop when we reach the Bow River pathway and if necessary make a short detour to Carburn Park. As well, we might do the same at the Deerfoot Casino. The next bathrooms will be found at a Tim Hortons on the east end of Mackenzie, at the Ranch and at Glennfield.
Given good weather, we can dine on the green grass of the park area in New Brighton.
As the group may be a little large, we may need to divide into two. Hazel offered to sweep for the May 18 ride, and may do so again, but another leader and sweep for a possible second group may be desirable. If you are willing to either lead or sweep that second group, please indicate so in the message box when you sign up.
Come prepared with the following: your helmet, water, emergency information, sun glasses, sun screen, spare tube, tire pump, band-aids, and a lock for your bike should a lengthy stop be planned, Be sure your bike is in good working order. You should have a bike bell, your electric bike batteries should be fully charged, and your tires should be properly inflated. Your brakes and gears must be in good working order, and it helps to have a clean chain. A mirror is a bonus.
If you have questions or comments, please send me an Email: [email protected]
The four figures below are my attempt at displaying the approximate route that we'll take on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the scales are different, and I cannot figure out to move the images around, but at least potential riders will have some idea of where we'll be going (assuming the weather cooperates!). If any readers know how to solve my display problems, please contact me at the address above.
Meeting Location: Trico Centre, opposite Southcentre
Leader: Dean P/Laurie L
Sweep: Hazel B/Keven B
There is a maximum of 24 riders on this ride.
